I am fairly sure, that the simplest Career in the world about now must be a product engineer for Apple. It is definitely a New career I would be interested in embarking on, as I am rather sure it must be great being paid for doing the complete bare minimum with your time at work. I want to discuss this career and what I would do if it were to be my own New career.
Firstly, I want to begin by saying the views and opinions discussed in this article are entirely my own, and have no connection to any websites or groups or anything like that. This is purely the rantings of a person searching for New careers, and wanting to vent their spleen about the injustice of some jobs that exist these days.
Now my major gripe with Apple and their ‘designers’ is the product that made Apple so massively po¬pular in the first place – the iPod. How on earth this thing ever became trendy I will never, ever, be able to understand. Prior to the launch of the iPod, Apples fortunes had not been so good. They had experienced random success – some of their devices failing miserably, like the Newton, one of the first PDA devices developed for normal use. They did gain some success with their range of Macs being continuously improved, however they did not do much to effect Microsoft’s huge, overpowering iron grip on the computer user market. The introduction of the iPod however, really seemed to improve Apples popularity a lot, and helped give them a greater user base than ever before. It created a number of New careers, and boosted Apples profits considerably. The question I must ask is how? How on earth did this item become as admired as it did, and I still to this day do not understand the attraction with it. The originals are chunky, expensive, and blemished
by complaints about battery life. Yet somehow, they ended up being the item that everyone needed, everyone had to have, mainly amongst students – Apple exploded in popularity. I find the iPods painful dependence on the appalling iTunes program to be one of its major flaws, and Apples irritating policy to not allow music to be shared between computers. After the incredible success of the iPod range, Apple have of course went to make other massively popular products, the iPhone, and of course more recently the iPad. While to me these seem to have a bit more attractiveness than the iPod, I certainly do not understand how they can charge so much for these products.
So, this is why of all the New careers I have looked at recently, I think becoming a designer for Apple would be the simplest. It seems it doesn’t truly matter what you design, you can make the most glaringly obvious mistakes with your layout (iPhone 4 antenna anyone?) and still get paid a lot of money for it. Apple has the luxury of having a devoted army of obsessed fans, willing to ignore your every design fault and hand you their life savings and first born to be the first to obtain one of your products. Undoubtedly a nice easy Career to get into!
