Panasonic TX-P42X20 Review

admin

One of the latest mid-size plasma televisions to hit the market, the Panasonic TXP42X20 is a familiar, if souped-up, face in the crowd. Panasonic’s X10 line was so popular that this new X20 line doesn’t deviate too much from the standard set. This allows them to dominate the plasma television price market, as much of the TV’s styling follows the same aesthetic as its earlier model. Mid-range by features but budget by cost, the Panasonic TX-P42X20 is definitely well-placed.

Styling

Panasonic’s new plasma TV looks pretty similar to most of its old products The black glossy finish and textured cabinet that have defined Panasonic for years are replicated in this new television, making it clear that Panasonic is more interested in maintaining its brand than in branching out into new design territory. Despite the lack of change, this aesthetic has worked for Panasonic in the past and will continue to work for this newest offering. If you’re looking for a TV whose exterior looks drastically different from what you’re used to, go elsewhere, but if that doesn’t concern you, you won’t have any problems with the Panasonic TXP42X20.

Image Quality

Despite the familiar nature of the Panasonic TXP42X20’s styling, it boasts some useful picture quality upgrades. Screen flicker and ghosting are reduced thanks to 100Hz Double Scan technology, making watching TV much easier on viewers’ eyes. Improved Black Levels create intense blacks, unusual for budget HD ready TVs which tend toward “greyish” rather than inky black. The Panasonic Viera’s TXP42X20’s unorthodox 1024×768 screen resolution gives it powerful colour balance, providing accuracy previously only attained on the highest-end plasma televisions.

Sound Quality

The strong image quality of the Panasonic Viera TXP42X20B makes its sound quality seem a little lackluster. High-pitched sounds for this plasma television are decent, but the lower registers don’t always sound like they should. When set side-by-side with similarly priced flat screen televisions, however, the Panasonic TX-P42X20 is nearly always superior, acceptably handling all but the most booming tracks. The sound betrays the immersive nature of the image quality; if you want an immersive sound system, you need to buy external speakers.

Extra Features

With new features for SD cards, gaming, and other AV devices, the X20 is light-years ahead of its predecessor. Gamers will enjoy the X20’s new Game Mode, which provides clearer visuals in shadowed areas. With more HDMI inputs, the X20 allows you to connect three high-definition devices at the same time. The X20 provides three HDMI slots, a useful improvement as more and more gaming systems and media players require HDMI support. The Panasonic TX-P42X20B contains a SD card slot, allowing for plug-and-play access to all your digital camera and video devices. While higher-end TVs allow you to say goodbye to paying Virgin or Sky for digital channel access, the X20 does not contain a Freesat tuner. Freesat tuners are exclusive to high end televisions on the market, and the X20’s exceptionally low cost, combined with the impressive HD performance, somewhat mitigate this lack.

Final Review

A fully solid performance by the Panasonic TXP42X20B indicates a television that goes above and beyond its budget price. For those who want to take advantage of the latest plasma technology at a reasonable price, the X20 is a definite option.
